  • I got mine back too and I'm so happy! What do we do now that we have them, though? Will they eventually show up on Xanga? All of mine basically look like this:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    -<rss xmlns:wp="http://wordpress.org/export/1.1/" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:wfw="http://wellformedweb.org/CommentAPI/" xmlns:content="http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/content/"

What do we do with all that? Do we import that to another site? I looked at wordpress but have no idea how to transfer what Xanga sent me to their site.

  • @applehead7 have you donated or bought a subscription to Xanga? If yes, then I'm sure someone from Xanga will help you if you contact them about it. If you wish to remain with Xanga, and have not purchased a subscription you can do so here: https://xanga.crowdhoster.com/relaunch-xanga

If you do not wish to pay the yearly subscription and wish to move to another blog hosting service -- the process is fairly simple. Your blog archive is in a WXR format. Wordpress.com makes the transition simple in that regard. If you have made an account on Wordpress.com follow these instructions. http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

  • Thank you so much for the response Cagey. I have not yet purchased a subscription- I will be more than happy to do so if that means keeping my blogs here.

  • Cagey- Do you know if the new blogging format allows you to edit dates? I was in the process of moving blogs over from another site to Xanga when they upgraded to 2.0. I know a lot of the blogging sites that upgraded no longer give you the option to edit dates, times, etc on blogs.

  • How do you move your files to wordpress.com? My file isn't WXR... it just says Compressed Zip folder...

  • Xanga 2.0 is powered by Wordpress software, and Wordpress certainly allows you to change and edit dates so I would imagine Xanga would aswell once you get up and running.

@Analeebanana you'll want to extract your file out of the ZIP, after downloading, (by right click>EXTRACT). That will give you one single file in XML format. If you are planning on staying with Xanga, you'll have to purchase a subscription and await their instructions. If you're planning on moving to another bloghost such as Wordpress itself -- follow these instructions http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

  • Alright, thanks so much for the help.

  • To the person who explained about importing blogs to Wordpress above, it doesn't let me import Xanga. Therefore, it forces me to pay for my blog????

  • I have a Mac. I just downloaded my archive (thanks Xanga!!! so relieved!) but when I look at the .zip in the finder, it gives me 20 .xml files. Does this sound right??

I am trying to import the first .xml file to Wordpress, and while it seems to be working, it's taking a really long time. Is this what I'm supposed to be doing?

  • P.S. Thanks so much for helping explain this, cagey!

  • @thebusyvegan Keep in mind while Xanga 2.0 is powered by Wordpress (Wordpress does not own them, Xanga is just using the software), it is not the same as Wordpress.com which is a totaly different hosting service. Nevertheless, the archive file *should* be able to be imported into Wordpress.com if so desired. Wordpress.com offers both free and paid options for bloghosting. Xanga, however is moving to the paid subscription model. If you are unable to import the blog into Wordpress.com using the instruction above, then I would suggest that its unfortunately an issue with the file and something that Xanga will have to address.

@igotsapoodle Im not familar with Macs, sorry.. but no actually that doesnt sound right to me. Before the transition to 2.0 we were given our archives to download. For me it was one single XML in a Zip and this uploaded easily into Wordpress.com. Seems this is an issue Xanga will have to sort out for you. Im using a mobile device atm, and cannot have a look at the new archive, but Ill give it a test tomorrow to confirm if there's a problem. Since I was a free user of Xanga, I will not be moving over to 2.0. Im just here trying to answer questions for people.. I feel really badly for you guys.

  • The file that you get when you get your archive download contains an .xml file that you simply upload (via Tools in your Dashboard in this site here or at wordpress.com or selfhosted wordpress.org stuff) and all your things will be recovered.

  • @igotsapoodle In my zip file I had 7 .xml files. They all imported into Wordpress just fine. It took a bit but I got all my blogs onto a new Wordpress blog. You must have a lot of posts if you had 20 .xml files!

  • @a_b0t yes I had 9 years' worth of posts! Haha!

P.S., Just to be clear, so you uploaded each .xml file individually then? I did upload the first one, and got an e-mail that the import was successful, but none of my old xanga posts show up :/

  • I may also just contact Wordpress Help to ask if those posts should be showing up in my new Wordpress.

  • @igotsapoodle Yes I uploaded each .xml individually. I'm not sure why your old posts aren't showing up. Mine all showed up fine in Wordpress. Have you tried uploading any other .xml files?

  • @igotspoodle, yes that is odd. My archives also show many files instead of just one file they gave us before. Neveretheless I also tested this on Wordpress.com and it worked just fine. Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • sorry im stupid how can i get my posts back??
do i really pay for xanga?
    thank you sooo much

  • @sorlojai Do you still wish to continue blogging on Xanga? If so, yes Xanga is moving to a pay-only subscription service.

If you do not wish to continue blogging on Xanga, and would like to move to another bloghost provider that offers free options - you can now download your blog archive from your dashboard.

  • Hi everyone, just an update: I DID get the Wordpress to work! I had to upload each individually, like @a_b0t. @Cagey, thanks so much for your willingness to help too. Maybe the multiple files just show up on a Mac, who knows.

At any rate, to all reading this thread: multiple .xml files DO upload just fine to Wordpress!

  • Is there any other way to view our files? I've literally spent all day waiting to import mine onto blogger and it's just one file out of 17. It's been 12 hours.

  • How have you guys been uploading your files to wordpress when xanga isn't a system that's offered?

  • I dun understand...

  • @lawstfouryou, I'm not sure how else to view them except in their crazy computer code language.

It seems like either Blogger or your internet connection is really slow.

If you end up using Wordpress instead, go Dashboard > Tools > Import. Then choose Wordpress. Xanga isn't listed as an explicit option, but Xanga 2.0 uses Wordpress technology, so that's why it works. From there, just select the .xml file to be uploaded, and you're good.

  • P.S. using wordpress, my .xml files took 18 minutes each to upload (I had 20 of them). It only took me 2 evenings of intermittently uploading to get my entire Xanga onto Wordpress.

  • My biggest file is 471 KB. Smallest is 1 KB. Are yours that big?

  • Mine are actually larger- smallest is 162 KB, largest is over 500. That might be because some entries have images with them.

  • I remember having some problems with Blogger in importing (another reason why I chose Wordpress) when I looked for another bloghost. Stil, that's most unusual why its taking so long. The test ran this morning only took a few minutes time to upload.. hmm.. perhaps its something to do with the connection or the Mac.

  • Thanks for your help and prompt response. I switched to Wordpress but still taking just as long. Could but the connection, although I have five bars. I've gotten the email that it was imported but it still says it's processing. I will contact Wordpress.
