I used to be able to see this picture I added... but then it disappeared and/or became a red X?!
There are two reasons why an image that used to appear on your site no longer works:
- Remote Blocking
- Bandwidth Restrictions
Please note that if your image is hosted on another site, it's not Xanga's fault when that image stops working. :-)
Here are the details on remote blocking and bandwidth restrictions:
REMOTE BLOCKING
Some websites allow images to be viewed only while the visitor is visitng their website. These sites "remote block" access to images hosted on their site when a visitor accesses those images from another website:
- Some websites have a blanket policy to remote-block all websites from accessing their images.
- Some websites just hate Xanga, and remote-block images just from visitors at Xanga.
If you suspect this is what has happened, check with your image host to see what their policies are. As companies get more cost-conscious, lots of sites have started "remote blocking", which can result in your pretty pictures turning into ugly red X's.
BANDWIDTH RESTRICTIONS
The amount of data transmitted over the Internet is referred to as "bandwidth."
Some websites only allow a certain amount of traffic bandwidth per account per day/week/month. Once you go over the limit, that account will just stop working until the next day/week/month.
For example, if you've recently had a million visitors who are all downloading your huge, high-resolution background image, you will probably go over this bandwidth cap, and your image will no longer be transmitted to your visitors by your image host. Also, if you and all your friends have linked to somebody else's image, the odds of hitting a bandwidth cap on that image are quite a bit higher.
There are a few things you can do to fix this problem:
- Contact your image host and beg for a higher bandwidth cap
- Upgrade your account on your image host so you have a higher bandwidth cap
- Find the same image located elsewhere on the Internet, and link to that
- Upload that image to your own paid account on the Internet using Xanga Premium or another service
- Make your images smaller or user lower resolutions to use less bandwidth
