What types of codes can I use on my Xanga Site?

Xangans do the coolest things with Javascript Codes. And we definitely want to encourage Javascript hacking on Xanga! It's a great way for us to get a sense for what features people want...  and eventually, build those features into Xanga itself.

But there are some security concerns with allowing certain types of Javascript, so we've had to disable some of the JavaScript functionality that can be used for evil. Here's a partial list of some stuff we don't allow:

  • JavaScript files that are hosted outside Xanga
    • there are a few exceptions that we explicitly support
  • Cookie-related Javascript
  • Anything that tries to read the referrer page.

But that's just on the technical end. As more of our users start to hack away using JavaScript, we are realizing we should make a bit of a more formal policy on what's uncool to do in JavaScript.

So without further ado, here is Xanga's JavaScript Policy:

Please don't do the following things:

  • Hack Premium features
    • For example, please don't hide or overwrite the Xanga ads at the top of the page
    • Also, please don't add Custom Modules or hide Announcements

  • Sniff cookies and try to find your visitors' usernames and passwords
    • We encrypt our cookies anyway, but this is just rude!

  • Create JavaScript blogworms or viruses
    • You'd think this is an obvious one. But in general, please don't try to create Javascript which maliciously self-reproduces itself from one Xanga site to another.

  • Mess with your readers' minds by pretending they posted something they didn't
    • There are some hacks out there that let you welcome readers, e.g. "Welcome John!". That is cool, but please don't use this hack to make them think they posted something they didn't.
    • Some of them will freak out and email us about all sorts of complicated conspiracy theories about how their entire computer has been compromised and it is all Xanga's fault.

And in general, please be careful as you try out any Javascript hacks on your site. We don't explicitly support them, and some scripts may break your Xanga site if you're not careful.

In the meantime, please have fun writing and playing with JavaScript on Xanga!
